Osoyoos Indian Band blocks FortisBC smart metres due to radiation fears

Osoyoos Indian Band blocks FortisBC smart metres due to radiation fears

Utility smart metres emit far less electromagnetic radiation than microwaves or laptop computers, but that hasn’t stopped communities across B.C. from fearing the devices.
The Osoyoos Indian Band is the latest to voice its concerns by prohibiting the installation of the FortisBC smart metres at any of the more than 700 homes on the reserve, Chief Clarence Louie announced Thursday.

There isn’t scientific evidence to verify the safety of the devices, Louie said, adding it is his responsibility to “err on the side of caution” to protect the people and the land.
But the radiofrequency energy emitted from the smart metres is more than 7,500 times below Health Canada limits, according to FortisBC.

Science has not yet made a consistent link between cancer and waves, which people are also exposed to when using cell phone or wireless Internet.
