OAKLAND, Calif. —
The City of Oakland on Monday said it has pinpointed the source of its persistent problems with its police radios. Officers say they've counted as many as 500 radio failures a month.
Now the city announced it has discovered the problem is due to interference from AT&T antennas on cell phone towers, particularly one located on east Ninth Street.
Last month during President Obama's visit, some radios went down for a half hour.
KTVU tried to ask Oakland Mayor Jean Quan about the development Monday night, but she declined comment.
AT&T sent a statement that said in the interest of public safety the company has "temporarily taken some 2G frequencies out of service at some cell sites in Oakland. We continue to operate on other 2G frequencies and our 3G and 4G service throughout the area is unaffected."
