PUC needs to study smart meters

The Maine Supreme Judicial Court made the right decision last week when it ruled the Maine Public Utilities Commission needs to probe further into claims that Central Maine Power's smart meters could be unsafe.
The high court on July 12 ordered the PUC to reconsider a complaint made by Bowdoinham resident Ed Friedman and others that smart meters pose health risks. They maintain that radio frequency radiation from smart meters can cause a variety of ailments including sleep loss and heart palpitations.
Friedman said this week that he hopes the ruling will spark the PUC to hold "full evidentiary hearings" on the matter. We certainly agree that the PUC now has to take this matter seriously. At the time the smart meters were first proposed, we felt that the PUC was too easily lead by Central Maine Power and too easily dismissive of counter claims. It has no choice now but to take those claims into consideration.
A fair, open and vetted process is always best.
